SOLUTIONS (Using Science)
Year Long
NEWS ALERT: The effects of climate change on our ecosystem are reaching critical levels! If humanity has any chance of survival, we may need a new home base - should we build a colony on Mars? How would we get there? Do we have the technology we need to travel to Mars? How do rockets work?
The scenario described above is an example of a ‘real’ issue that you might encounter if you choose to study this year-long general Science elective.
Working in teams you’ll research, create and develop solutions to a range of proposed questions and issues such as:
Can wolves change rivers?
How should we feed the world?
What can we do to make our oceans healthy?
How can we power the world, and do so more sustainably?
Each of these issues addresses through key concepts from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and the Earth sciences. Solutions is for all FLE students and is a great option for anyone wanting to study Science broadly. The concepts are generally delivered at Level 8 or 9, but can include Level 7 and 10 content to suit the needs of the students.
Solutions is a multidisciplinary Science subject, allowing each student’s natural curiosity to be stimulated around real-world issues. Concepts will be studied by the class to provide context for key ideas before they have the opportunity to creatively apply their knowledge to propose and present solutions to these problems.
Students will be provided with opportunities to inquire scientifically and develop mastery in applying a methodology to turn curiosity into knowledge. Key life skills such as perseverance, problem-solving, researching and collaboration will be fostered and developed. The learning includes hands-on opportunities such as practical experiments, product and experiment design and construction.
If you love Science, this is the subject for you! The future requires curious minds with the ability to understand, invent and discover solutions to genuine challenges.
Solutions can be taken concurrently with any of the other Science electives.
