VCE VET ICT: Certificate III in Information Technology

The ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology targets a select group of Unit 1 & 2 and Unit 3 & 4 students across a two-year duration. Upon successful completion of all competency units within this program, students will attain a full Certificate III in Information Technology.

Enrolled students will become integral members of the Junior Tech Crew (JTC) team, with the opportunity to engage in structured work placements at the Templestowe College IT Service Desk during scheduled hours, providing technical support to the TC community. Additionally, students will participate in one weekly VET class to enhance their theoretical and practical understanding of ICT.

The first year of the course (Unit 1 & 2) is unscored, leading to a statement of attainment upon completion. In the second year, students may opt to undertake scored Units 3 and 4.

Core and Elective units of the Certificate III program cover Applications, Technical Support, and Administration streams, furnishing students with fundamental IT knowledge and skills essential for basic help-desk support within the JTC team.

Pathways and career opportunities

Participants of the Junior Tech Crew (JTC) team in the Certificate III in Information Technology course will explore:

  • Collaborative work within a technical customer service setting

  • Development of critical and creative thinking abilities

  • Utilization of standard diagnostic tools and structured troubleshooting methods for hardware and software

  • Provision of ICT guidance to clients

  • Operation and troubleshooting of Computer Operating Systems and Hardware, along with software packages.

  • Installation and optimization of operating systems using diverse installation media.

  • Maintenance, repair, and basic administration of ICT equipment and software

  • Network problem determination and resolution using OSI layer troubleshooting techniques.

  • Secure management of Personal Identifiable Information

  • Introduction to Programming Techniques

  • Installation and configuration of small home office networks

  • Logging client incidents and requests in an Incident Management System

  • Implementation of environmentally sustainable IT practices

  • Adherence to ICT and IP Ethics and privacy policies

Over the span of two years, JTC team members will develop interpersonal skills, customer-service acumen, and foundational IT troubleshooting expertise. Participation in this course offers valuable community engagement opportunities and exposure to various TC events. It serves as a comprehensive introduction to IT, encompassing design, support, customer service, and troubleshooting. Completion of this course paves the way for further studies in Certificate IV in Information Technology.
