FLE Humanities

year long

Have you ever wondered why the world is the way it is? This subject will look at the geographical, historical and social factors that have changed our society. Together, we will explore the more recent events that have shaped our everyday lives, including:

  • Crime and punishment

  • Identity and conflict

  • The geographies of human well-being and happiness

  • Vikings!

  • Business and economics

  • Wars and revolutions

This subject will allow students to explore History, Geography, Economics, Civics and Citizenship across a range of topics and through various activities. There might also be the opportunity for an excursion or two! In 2024 we visited the Old Melbourne Gaol and are planning more fun events for later in the year based on student interest.

Students will have an influence over what we study in each semester and will have the option to focus on an area of interest exclusive to them if they don’t find certain topics engaging. This is how we ended up starting with the gruesome crime and punishment unit in 2024, and ending semester one with designing Viking shields!

We will focus on developing skills through a variety of tasks including:

  • Creating your own NGO (non-government organisation)

  • Starting your own business

  • Researching what makes a country ‘happy’

  • Compiling a news log of interesting stories from around the world

  • Completing a research report into national identity

This subject can lead into a range of electives, Pre-VCE and VCE classes, but is also an opportunity to learn some interesting stuff across a range of disciplines!

Student Testimonials

FLE Humanities this semester has been a really fun and informative subject. We're currently learning about Vikings, and decorating our own shields. The way we get to learn includes components of critical thinking, creativity, and research through games, effective class discussions, and independent or group work. I'd definitely recommend FLE students to participate in this elective, it’s a beneficial way of learning that I think would suit many students. – Zara (FLE2)

FLE Humanities is a really fun class that I would definitely recommend. It's a great opportunity to learn lots of new things about the world - including current news stories, wars, Vikings, and more. I particularly enjoyed the Identity and Conflict unit, where we got to pick an issue about Australia and really deep dive into what it meant for our culture. Another good topic was Crime and Punishment, where we looked at lots of different ways to be punished, including different types of prisons around the world, and different levels of crime. Overall, Humanities is a great subject to choose for people wanting to learn more about history, the world, and their culture. – Lulu (FLE2)

I am liking FLE Humanities, it's been really fun with the making shields, TWTW (‘The World This Week’) and Old Melbourne Gaol excursion. I have tried to recommend the class to other students. I really enjoy the positive interaction between students in the room. – Willem (FLE1)

First term we learned about crime and punishment and I really enjoyed learning about different crimes and punishments, and going to Melbourne gaol. – Satya (FLE2)
